The Grove woodland in Churston is home to a new tree sculpture, designed by students from Brixham Community College and local wood sculptor Jack Tree.
Project Officer Emma Reece has teamed up with the local school to design a sculpture from a felled beech tree that had become rotten and dangerous. A workshop was held at the Grove with students from Brixham Community College and sculptor Jack to come up with ideas on what it could be turned into.
Emma Reece, Brixham AONB Project Officer said ‘We wanted to create a special place for people to ‘encounter' as they walk through the woods. The sculpture is lined up so the four stumps face the four poles - north, south, east and west. Each pillar also represents the four seasons that are linked to the poles i.e. winter and north, summer and south. Artwork from the college students has been used for these designs.
‘As well as the sculpture, the Trust's Brixham volunteers have helped create amphitheatre style seating around the structure for future use as an outdoor theatre and storytelling space. The project has been widely supported by regular users of the Grove and visitors to the area.'
Other community groups have also been involved in the work including young people completing a Duke of Edinburgh award and Torbay Youth Service. Many of the groups are also carving masks that will be installed around the area.
The Trust hopes to complete the project in September and hold an event for all those involved in the project to celebrate its completion. It is hoped the new area will be used for events such as storytelling and theatre workshops. |
