AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY
The Natural Beauty project is all about getting people actively involved in the Brixham section of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With the support of the Heritage Lottery fund, this three year project aims to raise awareness of the AONB status around Brixham. The sites include Sharkham Point, Berry Head National Nature Reserve and The Grove woodland through to Elberry Cove.

These special areas are under a lot of pressure from visitors, vandalism and misuse; through the Natural Beauty project the community of Brixham is working to make a positive change to help protect these special sites.

This is happening through volunteer involvement from practical tasks to ‘friends of' groups. Education work with local schools and community groups also increases the understanding of why these sites are important. Events are taking place throughout the year from wildlife walks and beach cleans to walling courses and bird box making workshops.

If you are interested in any aspect of this project, want to attend an event or help out as a volunteer, please contact Emma Reece on 01803 882022 or email aonb@countryside-trust.org.uk

LOCAL SCHOOL HELPS TRANSFORM OLD BEECH TREE INTO WOODLAND SCULPTURE

The Grove woodland in Churston is home to a new tree sculpture, designed by students from Brixham Community College and local wood sculptor Jack Tree.

Project Officer Emma Reece has teamed up with the local school to design a sculpture from a felled beech tree that had become rotten and dangerous. A workshop was held at the Grove with students from Brixham Community College and sculptor Jack to come up with ideas on what it could be turned into.

Emma Reece, Brixham AONB Project Officer said ‘We wanted to create a special place for people to ‘encounter' as they walk through the woods. The sculpture is lined up so the four stumps face the four poles - north, south, east and west. Each pillar also represents the four seasons that are linked to the poles i.e. winter and north, summer and south. Artwork from the college students has been used for these designs.

‘As well as the sculpture, the Trust's Brixham volunteers have helped create amphitheatre style seating around the structure for future use as an outdoor theatre and storytelling space. The project has been widely supported by regular users of the Grove and visitors to the area.'

Other community groups have also been involved in the work including young people completing a Duke of Edinburgh award and Torbay Youth Service. Many of the groups are also carving masks that will be installed around the area.

The Trust hopes to complete the project in September and hold an event for all those involved in the project to celebrate its completion. It is hoped the new area will be used for events such as storytelling and theatre workshops.

Friends of The Grove Group
Emma Reece, AONB Community Liaison Officer has set up a ‘Friends of The Grove’ group that will help care for the Grove and Marridge Woods area.

Opportunities include practical work to assist the Trust in the management of the woodland such as footpath repair, beach cleans and scrub clearance. One of the main aims of the group is to improve communication between the trust and residents that regularly use the site. The group will be the eyes and ears for the Trust, providing a network of support for staff who maintain the site. It is also great way to keep Emma informed of any problems, such as vandalism, campers, fallen trees etc. and ensures the woodland remains a safe and enjoyable place for residents to use. Other ways to be involved are as a volunteer ranger or through attending events that are held throughout the year on these sites. These range from guided walks, bat walks, storytelling and tree planting.

If you have any ideas on how you can help or want to be involves to not hesitate to contact Emma on 01803 882022 or email aonb@countryside-trust.org.uk. The group is vital for protecting these important sites for the future and ensuring they are cared for and protected from misuse.
