Early humans made their homes in caves. Hyenas, bears and sabre-tooth cats roamed the land Sea levels were much lower, so that Berry Head stood 300 feet (100 metres) above a flat wooded plain. Victorian scientists, trying to understand how the earth was formed and when different rocks were laid down, found answers to some of their questions in fossils from the limestones of Torquay and surrounding area. As a result, a whole area of geological time (345-395 million years ago) is now known by scientists across the world as the "Devonian".
