Engaging and Educational Sessions

From den building and minibeast hunting on a farm to rockpooling on a beach, our sessions are carefully crafted to bring the curriculum to life. Led by our experienced team, each activity is designed to captivate and educate, ensuring students gain hands-on experience while learning about nature and conservation.

As a dedicated conservation charity, we care for nearly 80% of all Torbay’s green spaces, including woodland, coast, farmland, grassland, and streams. These diverse habitats means we can offer a wide range of locations and educational experiences to inspire and educate the next generation:

Overnight Stays at Warren Barn

Are you travelling from further afield? Or wish to extend the adventure over multiple days? We can provide overnight stays at our residential centre, Warren Barn in Cockington. This adds an extra dimension to the experience, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in nature.

What to expect

A typical visit is a full day and includes a 2 hour morning session, lunch break, followed by a 2 hour afternoon session.

Each session caters for up to 32 students. For larger groups we can run two sessions simultaneously (which then swap after lunch). Maximum capacity 64 students.

  • On arrival a member of staff will meet the group and introduce you to the location.
  • You’ll be shown where to store your bags.
  • The first engagement session typically runs from 10am -12pm.
  • You’ll have space to eat your packed lunches.
  • The second session typically runs from 12:30pm – 2:30pm. Timings can be adjusted to meet the needs of your groups.

Locations

Occombe Farm, Paignton

Occombe Farm is home to a working farm and Cookery School. Here you can choose two sessions for a full day of activities. Full details here.

  • Farm Visit – Meet and learn about our animals at Occombe farm.
  • Cookery – Gather ingredients from our Community Garden and cook some delicious wholesome food.
  • Gardening – Inspire your students with a visit to our Community Garden.
  • Discovery sessions – Explore what lies in the undergrowth and the variety of mini-beasts we have around the farm.
  • Den Building – Build a den in our 2km Nature Trail and develop teamwork skills, confidence and independence.
  • Firecraft – Learn how to build and be safe around fire. With tasty marshmallows as a treat.

Goodrington Sands, Paignton

Join us on the beach at Goodrington Sands where students will discover all the natural wonders living in coastal habitats including the rockpools nearby.

Sessions include:

  • Rockpooling – Students will safely explore rock pools to find marine creatures and learn about how they survive and thrive in these unique environments.
  • Team games – The group will take part in games to build confidence and team building skills.
  • Beach art – Students will use natural materials on the beach to create works of art based on what they have seen during their trip.


Berry Head National Nature Reserve, Brixham

Berry Head is one of Earth’s most extraordinary places. It’s part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark and home to an array of endangered species including greater horseshoe bats as well as two Napoleonic war forts.

Choose two of the following sessions for a full day of activities:

  • Orienteering – Develop map reading skills then navigate around this beautiful nature reserve.
  • Berry Head History – Learn about the Napoleonic era and how Britain defended its shores.
  • Human Geography – Discover how Berry Head influences the local economy, and its many land uses. 
  • Discovery sessions – Explore how this area supports wildlife and plants then go on a bug hunt.
  • Coastal Geography – Find out how this headland and coastal area was formed.

Cockington Country Park, Torquay

We care for Cockington Country Park located in Torquay, a picturesque setting featuring landscaped gardens, woodlands, ornamental lakes and memorial rose garden.

Sessions include:

  • Orienteering – Students will take part in team games to develop map reading and navigation skills, then they’ll set off round the beautiful gardens to complete our Orienteering Course. These sessions help students grow in confidence, independence and learn valuable teamworking skills.
  • Pond dipping – Students will explore the habitats and ecosystems to see what wonderful creatures lie beneath the water.
  • Team games – The group will take part in games to build confidence and team building skills.
